Why Is My App Ordering Defaulting to Whole Milk?
You may notice that the Blue Bottle app now defaults to whole milk instead of oat milk when you order. Here's what's changing and why.
What's Changing
Baristas in our cafes are now asking guests directly: "Whole or oat?" We've updated the app to reflect this same approach — instead of a pre-set default, we want every order to reflect your actual preference.
Both whole and oat milk remain available at no additional charge. Nothing about pricing has changed.
Why We Made This Update
Hospitality, for us, starts with understanding what each guest wants. Guest preferences have evolved since we first introduced oat milk as our default, and today we see strong demand for both dairy and plant-based options. Asking — rather than assuming — helps us get your order right the first time and cuts down on unnecessary remakes.
What This Means for You
- Ordering in the app: Double-check your milk selection before checkout, since whole milk will now be pre-selected.
- Reordering a past drink: If you previously ordered with oat milk, you can still quickly reselect it — it just won't be the default anymore.
- In café: Your barista will ask which you'd prefer at the register.
A Few Common Questions
Is Blue Bottle moving away from oat milk? No. Oat milk remains an important part of our menu and continues to be available at no additional charge.
Does this affect your sustainability commitments? No. This update is specifically about how we confirm milk preference during ordering, not a change to our broader sustainability approach.
Will this make ordering oat milk harder? Not at all — it's just as easy to select. You'll simply be asked (or need to select it) rather than have it applied automatically.
